What most players change
Most players keep abilities on 1 to 4, move their two most important active items off V and C onto mouse side buttons, and switch abilities to Quick Cast or Instant Cast so they fire without a second click. It’s all in Settings > Keybinds, with the casting options at the top of the Abilities section.
Quick cast won’t make you better on its own. It takes one click out of every ability, and over a match that adds up to faster combos and fewer abilities fired the wrong way.
Default Deadlock keybinds
These are the defaults on a fresh install. Valve has added and split binds over time, so press View Keybind Map at the top of the Keybinds page to see what your keys do right now, conflicts included.
- Abilities: 1, 2, 3, 4 (4 is your ultimate).
- Active items: Z, X, C, V.
- Jump / mantle: Space. Zipline / rope: also Space by default.
- Dash: Left Shift. Crouch / slide: Left Ctrl. Down dash: double-tap crouch.
- Melee: Q (tap for a light melee, hold for heavy). Melee parry / throw held item: F.
- Fire: left mouse. Zoom / alt-fire: right mouse. Reload: R.
- Open shop: B. Scoreboard: Tab. Extra info: Left Alt.
- Dev console: F7, once it’s enabled under Game > Interface.
Binds worth changing
A few defaults fight your movement hand. You’re holding W and usually Shift or Ctrl for most of a fight, so C and V are a stretch at exactly the moment you need a panic button.
- Put your two most important actives on mouse side buttons. Metal Skin, Ethereal Shift or Unstoppable are wasted if you can’t press them while strafing.
- Give Down dash its own key. It became rebindable in the September 29, 2026 update, and a dedicated key is far more reliable mid-fight than double-tapping crouch.
- Try Toggle crouch / toggle slide if holding Ctrl through long slides hurts your hand.
- Move Zipline / rope off Space if you keep grabbing ziplines when you meant to jump. Ropes follow whatever you bind it to.
- Bind In-world Ping to a key you can press without thinking. A ping on the Mid-Boss is worth more than a paragraph in chat.
- The Upgrade ability 1 to 4 binds spend ability points without opening a menu. Put them on modifier keys if you keep forgetting to level up.
Instant Cast vs Quick Cast vs Confirm Cast
The Casting mode dropdown at the top of Keybinds > Abilities sets the default for every ability, and you can override it per ability.
- Instant Cast: the ability fires the moment you press the key.
- Quick Cast: the ability fires when you release the key. Hold to see the targeting, let go to cast.
- Confirm Cast: the key selects the ability and Fire casts it. The classic two-click setup.
- Ability Default: uses whatever casting mode Valve set for that ability or item.
Which casting mode to use
Quick Cast suits most players. You keep the aiming preview while you hold the key but never need the second click, so shooting, dashing and casting flow together. It’s the closest thing to quick cast with an indicator from other MOBAs. Give it 20 matches before you judge it.
Instant Cast is faster still but drops the preview, so use it on abilities you aim with your crosshair anyway or that don’t need aiming: self-buffs, abilities that fire straight ahead, panic buttons. Confirm Cast still has a place on long-range or location-targeted abilities where a miss loses the fight, since it gives you time to line it up and lets you back out.
Items have their own setting, Active item casting, in Keybinds > Items. If most of your actives are self-cast defensive items, set it to Instant Cast; there’s nothing to aim with Metal Skin.
Alternate cast and self-cast
Self-casting runs through alternate cast. Healing Rite, Rescue Beam and Divine Barrier all say Can be self-cast, and some abilities have alt casts of their own: Holliday’s Powder Keg can be placed at her feet, and Wraith’s Card Trick can fire in reverse order.
Alternate cast mode has three options. Press and Hold alt-casts when you hold the ability key for a set time (Alternate cast hold time, 0.02 to 0.3 seconds, default 0.15). Double Tap alt-casts when you press the key twice inside the Double tap cast window (also 0.02 to 0.3 seconds, default 0.2). Alternate Cast Button uses a separate key: select the ability then press it, or hold it and press the ability key.
Quick Cast and Press and Hold don’t mix, because both depend on how long you hold the key. Switch to Press and Hold and any abilities on Quick Cast revert to Ability Default (the menu warns you first). If you want Quick Cast everywhere, use Double Tap or an Alternate Cast Button on a thumb key.
Cancelling abilities
Cancel ability has its own bind, and Jump also cancels channelled abilities by default. Turn on Cancel with ability key and pressing the same key again cancels too, which is handy on targeted abilities: 2 to start aiming, 2 again to put it away without wasting it.
Hero-specific keybinds
With Settings > Advanced > Hero-specific settings on, each hero can have its own binds, casting modes, alt-cast mode, reticle and mouse sensitivity. Pick a hero from the icon in the top left of Settings. The first icon is your base settings, and every hero falls back to those for anything you haven’t changed.
Hold Tab while browsing Settings to highlight what can be set per hero. Use it sparingly; every difference between heroes is one more thing to remember mid-fight.
Practical keybind layouts
Three layouts that work. Check each in View Keybind Map afterwards so no key is doing two jobs, and practise a new layout in the Sandbox before you take it into ranked.
- Defaults plus mouse buttons: abilities 1 to 4, Item 1 and Item 2 on the two side buttons, Item 3 and Item 4 on X and Z. Casting mode on Quick Cast, Alternate cast mode on Double Tap. The easiest step from the defaults.
- Close to WASD: Ability 1 to 3 on Q, E and C, ultimate on 4, Melee on a mouse side button, and items on 1, 2, 3 and Z. Rebind whatever else was on E or C. It takes about a week to learn, but your three basic abilities end up right next to your movement fingers.
- Heavy item user: abilities 1 to 4, all four actives on mouse buttons and Z/X, Active item casting on Instant Cast, Alternate Cast Button on Left Alt for self-casting heals. Good on supports who press Rescue Beam and Divine Barrier on a timer.
